During a speech in the Israeli parliament on Monday, President Donald Trump was interrupted by a protester demanding recognition of the State of Palestine. The individual, identified as Knesset member Ayman Odeh, was swiftly removed by security personnel.
"They kicked me out of the Knesset just for raising the simplest demand, one that the whole international community agrees on: Recognize the State of Palestine!" Odeh later wrote in a social media post.
The incident occurred as President Trump was addressing the Knesset to mark the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which came into effect on October 10. The agreement includes the exchange of hostages but does not stipulate U.S. recognition of Palestine as a state.
After the interruption, President Trump resumed his speech, commending U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff for his role in brokering the deal.
"Steve was chosen by me. He never did this before, but I knew him as a few things. He was a great businessman; he had tremendous negotiating skills, but I know a lot of people who negotiate pretty well, although it is an art. But most importantly, with Steve, he's just a great guy. Everybody loved him," Trump said.
The ceasefire agreement aims to end a two-year conflict, facilitating the release of 20 Israeli hostages held since the October 7, 2023 attacks, in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
"It's the start of a grand concord and lasting harmony for Israel, and all the nations of what will soon be a truly magnificent region. I believe that, so strongly," Trump stated.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude, referring to President Trump as the "greatest friend" Israel has ever had in the White House.
