Zelenskyy and Trump Discuss Enhancing Ukraine's Air Defense Amid Russian Strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Saturday to address the enhancement of Ukraine's air defense systems. This discussion follows a significant Russian assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which involved over 450 drones and 30 missiles, resulting in at least 20 injuries and widespread power outages. Ukrainian authorities have since restored electricity to 800,000 residents in Kyiv.

Zelenskyy described the call as "very positive and productive," emphasizing their focus on opportunities to bolster Ukraine's air defense and the concrete agreements being developed to achieve this goal.

The conversation also touched upon the potential provision of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. These missiles would enable Ukrainian forces to target strategic locations deep within Russian territory, a capability that Ukrainian officials believe could pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations.

This dialogue marks a shift in the Trump administration's approach to the Ukraine conflict. In recent weeks, President Trump has approved the first military support package of his term to Kyiv under the NATO-funded Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List initiative. Additionally, he has suggested that Ukraine could "win all of [the country] back in its original form."

The discussion comes as Ukraine prepares for a challenging winter, with Russia intensifying its air attacks and deploying new technologies to evade Ukraine's air defense systems. Ukrainian military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that the country's air defenses were about 74 percent effective but noted a 1.3-fold increase in Russian air strikes over the past month. He emphasized the need for further efforts to protect critical infrastructure and logistics.

A White House spokesperson confirmed that the call between the two leaders took place, underscoring the ongoing collaboration between the United States and Ukraine in addressing the latter's defense needs.
