Venezuelan Opposition Leader Maria Corina Machado Awarded 2025 Nobel Peace Prize
Maria Corina Machado receives the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts in promoting democracy in Venezuela.
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights and striving for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.
Machado, born in 1967, has been a prominent figure in Venezuela's political landscape. She co-founded the electoral watchdog organization Súmate in 2002, which advocates for free and fair elections. In 2010, she was elected to the National Assembly with a record number of votes but was expelled from office in 2014.
In 2023, Machado announced her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. After being barred from running, she supported opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. Despite widespread mobilization and documentation suggesting the opposition's victory, the incumbent regime declared itself the winner and tightened its grip on power.
Upon receiving the award, Machado dedicated it to the people of Venezuela, emphasizing their courage and determination in the struggle for freedom. She also acknowledged the support of international allies, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, for their decisive backing of Venezuela's democratic cause.
The Nobel Committee's decision highlights the importance of non-violent efforts in the pursuit of democracy and human rights, recognizing Machado's enduring commitment to these principles despite facing significant personal risks.
