Des Moines School District Sues Search Firm Over Superintendent's Hiring
The Des Moines Independent Community School District has filed a lawsuit against JG Consulting, alleging negligence in the hiring of former superintendent Ian Roberts, who was arrested for immigration violations and firearm possession.
The Des Moines Independent Community School District (DMICSD) has initiated legal action against JG Consulting, the executive search firm responsible for the hiring of former superintendent Ian Roberts. The lawsuit, filed in the Iowa District Court for Polk County, accuses the firm of negligence and breach of contract, asserting that JG Consulting failed to adequately vet Roberts, leading to his appointment despite his ineligibility to lawfully hold the position.
Roberts, who assumed the superintendent role in May 2023 with an annual salary of $270,000, was arrested last month by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Authorities charged him with possession of illegal weapons after discovering a loaded handgun in his vehicle during the arrest. Further investigations revealed that Roberts had a history of legal issues, including prior convictions and a final removal order issued in 2024.
The district contends that JG Consulting's oversight resulted in significant costs, including expenses related to finding a replacement and damage to the district's reputation. In response, JG Consulting's attorney, Josh Romero, stated that the company stands by its record and intends to defend itself in court. He emphasized the firm's commitment to supporting school districts nationwide in identifying qualified candidates for executive roles.
In light of these developments, other school districts collaborating with JG Consulting have expressed concerns. The Eanes Westlake Innovative School District in Texas, currently utilizing the firm's services for a superintendent search, assured its community of its commitment to high standards and thorough candidate evaluations.
Roberts remains in federal custody, facing charges related to his immigration status and firearm possession. The case has prompted scrutiny of hiring practices and background verification processes within educational institutions.
