A late-night shooting in Montgomery's downtown district resulted in two fatalities and twelve injuries, prompting an ongoing police investigation.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Bibb Street and Commerce Street, where two groups exchanged gunfire amidst a crowd. Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described the event as a "mass shooting," emphasizing the recklessness of the shooters who "did not care about the people around them when they did it."
Among the injured were two juveniles, one of whom is in life-threatening condition. In total, three victims remain in critical condition, while nine others sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Mayor Steven Reed condemned the violence, stating, "To have a heinous event like this take place prior to midnight in a busy part of our entertainment district is reckless and selfish."
The shooting took place during a particularly busy weekend in Montgomery, coinciding with events such as the Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic, the Alabama National Fair, and Alabama State University's homecoming game.
Authorities are actively investigating the incident, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses. No arrests have been made as of Sunday morning. The police chief noted that the firearms used were equipped with high-capacity magazines, and some weapons have been recovered in connection with the case.
The Montgomery Police Department urges anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that even the smallest detail could be critical to the investigation.
