49ers Edge Rams 26-23 in Overtime Thriller
The San Francisco 49ers secured a 26-23 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams, with Eddy Piñeiro's decisive field goal and a crucial defensive stop.
In a closely contested matchup on Thursday night, the San Francisco 49ers emerged victorious over the Los Angeles Rams with a 26-23 overtime win. Kicker Eddy Piñeiro sealed the game with a 41-yard field goal in the extra period, following a pivotal defensive stand that halted Rams running back Kyren Williams on a fourth-and-1 attempt at the 49ers' 11-yard line.
Quarterback Mac Jones led the 49ers' offense, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns. Despite an apparent leg injury sustained during the game, Jones remained effective, connecting with Kendrick Bourne for a career-high 10 receptions totaling 142 yards. Running back Christian McCaffrey contributed significantly, recording eight catches for 82 yards and adding 57 rushing yards.
The game featured a dramatic fourth quarter. Piñeiro's 59-yard field goal with 2:52 remaining gave San Francisco a brief lead. The Rams responded with a drive that ended in a goal-line fumble by Williams, which was forced and recovered by 49ers' Alfred Collins. Los Angeles managed to tie the game with a 48-yard field goal by Joshua Karty with just 2 seconds left, sending the contest into overtime.
On the Rams' side, quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Puka Nacua made history by becoming the first NFL player to record over 50 receptions in his team's first five games, finishing the night with 10 catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers' defense was instrumental in the win, particularly in overtime. After Piñeiro's field goal, the Rams advanced to the 49ers' 11-yard line. Facing a fourth-and-1 situation, Rams coach Sean McVay opted to go for the first down. However, 49ers defenders Marques Sigle and Deommodore Lenoir stopped Williams short, securing the victory for San Francisco.
This win improves the 49ers' record to 4-1, while the Rams fall to 3-2. Both teams are set to play on Sunday, October 12, with the 49ers visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Rams traveling to face the Baltimore Ravens.
