Russia Launches Overnight Missile and Drone Attacks on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia
Russian forces conducted extensive missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia, causing casualties and significant damage to residential areas.
Russian forces launched a series of missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia during the night of September 28, 2025, resulting in casualties and substantial damage to residential areas.
In Kyiv, a five-story building was partially destroyed, and multiple districts reported damage to residential infrastructure, non-residential buildings, and parked vehicles. At least six individuals were injured, with five requiring hospitalization, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. He urged residents to remain in shelters as the attacks continued.
In Zaporizhzhia, a missile struck a multistory building, damaging nine houses and 14 high-rise buildings, as well as a school and an enterprise's production facilities. Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that at least 16 people were injured, including three children. Regina Kharchenko, acting head of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, described the aftermath, noting that remnants of daily life, such as photographs and children's toys, were visible in the damaged windows.
Explosions were also reported in Khmelnytskyi Oblast, where air defenses were active. Governor Serhii Tiurin indicated that preliminary reports showed no casualties.
In response to the attacks, Poland scrambled fighter jets and closed airspace over Lublin and Rzeszow due to unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.
These attacks are part of an intensified Russian aerial campaign targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Officials have warned of potential further mass attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure as colder months approach.
