A federal agent was filmed pushing a woman to the ground during a confrontation at a New York City immigration courthouse, leading to public outcry and demands for disciplinary action.
The incident occurred at 26 Federal Plaza, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) District Office in Lower Manhattan. In the video, the woman and her daughter are seen clinging to a man, reportedly her husband, who is being detained by ICE agents. After the agents separate the family, the woman is led into a nearby room. Upon returning to the hallway, she confronts a federal agent, pleading in Spanish, "You guys don't care about anything!" The agent responds with "Adios, adios," before pushing her into a wall and onto the floor. The agent then instructs nearby officers to remove her from the building.
New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who was present at the courthouse, stated, "An ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital."
Representative Dan Goldman, whose district includes the courthouse, identified the woman as Monica and her two young children. He called on Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to "take appropriate disciplinary action and implement measures to prevent this from happening again."
The federal building at 26 Federal Plaza has become a focal point for immigration enforcement in New York City. It houses an immigration court, the FBI's New York field office, and other federal agencies. The building has been a routine location where ICE agents apprehend migrants following court appearances.
The incident has intensified concerns about ICE's enforcement tactics, particularly the practice of detaining individuals at courthouses. Critics argue that such actions undermine trust in the judicial system and deter individuals from attending mandatory court proceedings.
ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.
