Denmark Faces 'Hybrid War' Amid Drone Incursions Over Airports
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warns of a 'hybrid war' following drone sightings over multiple airports, suggesting potential Russian involvement.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has declared that Denmark is experiencing a "hybrid war" after a series of drone sightings over several airports and military facilities this week.
On Monday, Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport suspended operations for approximately four hours due to drone activity, affecting around 20,000 passengers. Similar incidents occurred at Oslo's Gardermoen Airport in Norway, which was also forced to close temporarily after drone sightings.
Frederiksen emphasized the seriousness of these events, stating, "This is a new security policy situation, and it is far from over." She noted that while investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the drones, the incidents align with a broader pattern of threats across Europe.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the drone activity as a "hybrid attack" conducted by a "professional actor," indicating a systematic operation involving different types of drones. He added that there is no direct military threat to Denmark at this time.
The Russian Embassy in Denmark has denied any involvement, stating, "Russia strongly rejects the absurd speculations about its involvement in the incidents."
In response to these developments, Denmark is considering invoking NATO's Article 4, which allows member states to consult when their territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened. Additionally, the country plans to enhance its capabilities to detect and neutralize drones to safeguard critical infrastructure.
These incidents have heightened concerns among European nations about the security of their airspace and the potential for hybrid threats targeting critical infrastructure.
