US, Iran and Russia discuss possible nuclear deal as tensions persist

The New York Times reported that Tehran is weighing mediator proposals on its nuclear program, while Iran's security chief met President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and U.S. officials consider options for the conflict.

The New York Times said Tehran is reviewing a set of proposals presented by mediators that could shape the future of its nuclear programme, according to five officials familiar with the talks. The report highlighted Qatar's role in facilitating the discussions and described the proposals as "concrete".

In Moscow, Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei said he held consultations with President Vladimir Putin on regional issues. > "President Putin condemned the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and regarded the war against Iran as unjust. He declared that he would do everything in his power to help bring the war to an end," Rezaei said. The meeting also covered a potential gas-pipeline project from Russia to Iran.

An Iranian source quoted by Al Mayadeen television warned that Tehran would keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until its demands are met and would not negotiate on that point.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance posted on X that the recent midterm election loss was largely due to the war with Iran, among other factors. President Trump responded that the war had caused short-term gasoline price increases but said the decision to confront Iran was necessary to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

White House officials told Reuters that Vance's post surprised many in Washington and that the administration is still reviewing options, including possible renewed strikes. Two sources said President Trump received a briefing on military options and that, despite intelligence assessments that further strikes would not change Tehran's position, the president could still order action, noting that the political risk is lower after the elections.
