Channel 4 Cancels UK Version of 'Married at First Sight' After Assault Allegations

Channel 4 announced the cancellation of the UK edition of 'Married at First Sight' and its spin-off following a Panorama investigation that identified multiple sexual assault claims and subsequent reviews of participant welfare.

Channel 4 confirmed that the UK edition of the reality series "Married at First Sight" will not be aired after a BBC Panorama investigation reported three alleged sexual assaults during production. One suspect was arrested on suspicion of rape, though the accused have denied the allegations.

Season six, already filmed, and the planned spin-off "Second Married at First Sight" have both been scrapped. Earlier seasons have been removed from the broadcaster's streaming service, while international versions remain available.

The broadcaster commissioned two independent reviews. A law firm examined whether the show's welfare protocols met Ofcom’s duty-of-care standards, and former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey assessed potential improvements to participant welfare. Both reviews cleared Channel 4 of regulatory breaches.

Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra said the recommended changes – such as continuous recording and separate sleeping arrangements for participants on their wedding night – would be too burdensome to implement. > "Whilst the review praised the welfare protocols in place and made no findings that Channel 4 breached the Ofcom Code, I have to consider when is the right time for Channel 4 to move on from a format," Dogra said in a statement. > "The recommendations are sensible and feasible, but their wholesale implementation raises fundamental questions about the editorial proposition of a show that has now run its course over ten years."

Ofcom has opened its own inquiry into the programme's fairness and privacy practices, and the Culture, Media and Sport Committee will hold an evidence session on Channel 4 later this month. Committee chair Caroline Dinenage said the cancellation "makes sense, given the findings of the review and the seriousness of the allegations," adding that the case highlights broader lessons for reality-TV production and regulation.
