New Jersey Ticket Wins $847 Million Powerball Jackpot

Résumé

A Powerball ticket sold in New Jersey matched all six numbers, securing an estimated $847 million prize, the lottery announced Thursday.

A Powerball ticket purchased in New Jersey matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing, resulting in an estimated $847 million jackpot, the lottery operator said on Thursday. The winning combination was 15, 34, 41, 53, 56 and Powerball 21, with a 2-times Power Play multiplier. The ticket holder can choose a lump-sum payment of $363.1 million or an annuity paid over 29 years.

No players claimed the $2 million and $1 million Match-5 prizes. The jackpot, the ninth-largest in Powerball history and the second-largest of the year, had been increased from $835 million. The previous jackpot win occurred on August 12, when a player in Illinois collected a $1.04 billion prize.

Powerball drawings are held three times weekly at 10:59 p.m. ET, and the prize pool will reset to $20 million for the upcoming Saturday draw. The odds of winning the jackpot were estimated at 1 in 292.2 million.

This drawing marked the first time that players from the United Kingdom participated from the start of a multi-drawing jackpot cycle, following the expansion of ticket sales to the UK in July, and it is also the first instance of a non-U.S. lottery contributing to the Powerball prize pool.
