Oil Prices Drop After Democrats Win Midterm Elections, Raising Policy Outlook

Resumen

Brent and WTI crude fell sharply following Democratic victories in the U.S. midterms, prompting declines in energy stocks amid expectations of shifts in U.S. energy and foreign policy.

Crude oil prices continued to fall on Wednesday after Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of Congress. Brent crude was priced at $94.30 a barrel, down about 9%, while West Texas Intermediate traded at $87.35, a decline of roughly 8%. The S&P Energy index slipped 4.77% to 976.18 as investors priced in possible changes to U.S. energy and foreign policies.

Analysts linked the market reaction to the election outcomes in states such as Texas and Georgia, where Democratic candidates campaigned on limiting new data-center construction—a sector that has been projected to drive future natural-gas demand.

"If Tehran recognises that Trump needs a deal, but not just any deal, a genuine opportunity could emerge to end the war. But if it interprets the results as evidence that American resolve has weakened, it could instead encourage him to launch a new military escalation," said Ebtesam al-Ketbi, president of the Emirates Policy Center, as quoted by Reuters.

Unidentified Iranian officials were reported to say Tehran remained on high alert, anticipating a possible escalation from President Trump in response to the election results. The combined effect of these expectations contributed to the sharp pullback in oil prices and a broader sell-off in energy-related equities.
