JetBlue hikes checked-baggage fees for second time in 2024

摘要

JetBlue increased fees for the first and second checked bags on U.S., Canada, Latin America and Caribbean flights, citing higher jet-fuel costs.

JetBlue announced higher checked-baggage fees for tickets purchased on or after Nov. 3. The first bag will cost at least $50 each way on most economy flights, up from $39, with peak-travel rates rising to $55 when booked 24 hours in advance and $70 for last-minute bookings during peak periods. Off-peak last-minute rates will be $60.

The fee for a second bag starts at $70 during off-peak periods and $75 during peak travel, while airport-checkout prices can reach $85.

The airline said the adjustments are intended to offset rising operating costs, particularly jet-fuel prices that have surged following disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. JetBlue reported an average fuel price of $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% increase from a year earlier, and expects $4.64 per gallon in the final quarter, an 85% rise.

JetBlue noted that demand remains strong despite higher fares and that eligible co-branded credit-card holders and loyalty-program members may still check bags without charge.

"The increases are intended to help offset higher operating costs while allowing the airline to keep its base fares competitive," the airline said in a spring statement.

The fee changes follow a prior increase in March, which prompted similar moves by other major U.S. carriers.
