Eagles name Joe Milton starter for Week 9 amid injury concerns

Résumé

Philadelphia will start rookie quarterback Joe Milton against the Giants while multiple starters remain sidelined or limited.

Philadelphia will start rookie quarterback Joe Milton in Week 9 as the team prepares to face the New York Giants on Sunday. Milton, a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft, made his first career start after appearing in limited action with the Dallas Cowboys last season.

The Eagles entered practice on Wednesday with several key players unavailable. Running back Saquon Barkley was listed as a day-no-play (DNP) due to hamstring and back issues, while wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks also missed practice because of hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively. Both have missed the past two games and are expected to sit out the upcoming matchup.

Other notable absences included linebacker Jihaad Campbell (hamstring/quad) and defensive back Michael Carter (abdomen). Kicker Jake Elliott was listed as limited with a right ankle injury, and several other players were marked as limited or full participation.

The team’s injury report also noted that Campbell missed the previous game against Washington and was replaced by Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who may see additional playing time. The Eagles will have a bye week following the Giants contest.

"We’re focused on getting healthy and preparing for each opponent," a team spokesperson said.

Milton, 26, was drafted out of Tennessee and spent time with the New England Patriots before being traded to Dallas, where he appeared in four games last season. His start against the Giants will be his first as a quarterback in the NFL.
