US tech stocks surge as Democrats win midterms, investors anticipate slower data-center expansion

摘要

Shares of major US technology companies rose sharply after Democrats secured large victories in the midterm elections, with investors betting that potential limits on new data-center construction will boost the value of existing assets.

Shares of the United States' leading technology firms jumped on Wednesday following decisive victories for Democrats in the recent midterm elections. Analysts said the market rally reflects expectations that political pressure could curb the pace of new data-center development, thereby increasing the value of existing facilities and easing cash-flow strains for companies that have been increasing capital spending on artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

If the upward trend continues, the five companies could add more than $750 billion in combined market value. The surge marks a reversal for cloud providers that recently reported higher borrowing as they shifted from cash-rich, low-debt balances to heavier spending on AI-related hardware, with Microsoft being an exception due to its $18.6 billion cash flow.

"Conceptually, post-election, there may be a bit of a slowdown or some bumps in the road for future data-center build-out," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth. "The hyperscalers already have data centers, so those assets are more valuable now because there's not going to be an overbuild of data centers. Also, if there's a slower pace of data-center build-out, then there's going to be a slower pace of CapEx spending. That certainly would impact the hyperscalers."

Dan Ives, senior managing director and tech analyst at Yorkville Ives, added that the primary concern for investors is the situation in Texas, which supplies roughly a quarter of the nation's data-center capacity. "Now it will happen at a more measured pace, which is likely a good thing in the eyes of many investors," he said.

The market reaction underscores how political outcomes can influence expectations for the technology sector, particularly regarding the development of power-intensive data-center infrastructure.
