Vance attributes Republican midterm losses to Iran war

Resumen

Vice President JD Vance said polling shows the Iran conflict drove voters who supported Trump in 2024 to back Democrats in the 2026 midterms, and outlined conditions for regaining support.

Vice President JD Vance said the war with Iran was a key factor behind the Republican defeats in the 2026 midterm elections. In a social-media post, he wrote that the president had confirmed the war’s impact the night before. Vance cited polling data indicating that many voters who supported Trump in 2024 switched to Democratic candidates in 2026, despite overall Republican turnout not being "catastrophic."

"The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026," Vance said.

He noted that a poll asked voters what would bring them back to the Republican Party, with four recurring themes: ending the war, addressing cost-of-living and inflation, adopting an "America First" stance, and revising the U.S. relationship with Israel.

Vance expressed optimism about the country's future and urged dissatisfied voters to channel their frustration into supporting Republican candidates who share their views.

"To the people who are just angry at the results, you should be. Let's take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country," he added.

The Democratic gains in the midterms have raised questions about Vance’s standing as a leading contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination. While Vance has historically opposed U.S. military interventions, reports indicate he was initially skeptical of the Iran strikes launched by President Trump and Israel in February, later aligning with the operation after it was approved. President Trump, when asked about any disagreement with Vance on the military action, said they "get along very well" and described Vance as "philosophically a little bit different" but supportive of the decision.
