Ghanakanta Gogoi, accused in a Guwahati mass shooting, died after police fired on him during an alleged attempt to seize an officer's pistol while being transported in Sivasagar.

Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia said Ghanakanta Gogoi was shot after he tried to take a police officer's service pistol while the suspect was being moved from Guwahati to Sivasagar. According to the SSP, Gogoi asked to leave the police vehicle at Phulpanichiga to relieve himself, stepped out, and attempted to seize the weapon of Sub-Inspector Debashish Sharma, the investigating officer in the case.

During the confrontation, two to three rounds were discharged, with two bullets hitting the police vehicle. One of the accompanying officers returned fire, striking Gogoi, who later died from his injuries. Sub-Inspector Sharma sustained a leg injury but remains in stable condition, the police official said.

The incident follows a separate shooting on October 26 at a hotel in Guwahati that left five people dead and two injured, one of whom later died. The victims were identified as Bhudev Bharali, 65; Helena Bharali, 58; Debarshi Kashyap, 39; Rinika Kashyap, 30; and Narayan Das, 48.
