Najib Razak to Pay RM50 million Fine to Activate House Arrest

Resumen

Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak is scheduled to pay a RM50 million fine today, meeting the condition for his transfer from prison to house arrest until August 2028.

Former Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is set to pay a RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, fulfilling the key requirement for his relocation from Kajang Prison to house arrest. The payment satisfies the condition attached to the conditional pardon granted by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim on Sept. 18 during the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board.

The royal decree allows Najib to serve the remainder of his reduced custodial term at home until Aug. 23, 2028.

Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said the Attorney General’s Chambers had not yet received proof of payment and noted that, while the pardon sets no fixed deadline for settlement, Najib must remain in prison until the fine is paid.

The fine stems from Najib’s conviction for the misappropriation of RM42 million from SRC International, for which he was sentenced in July 2020 to 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine, upheld by the Federal Court in August 2022. The Pardons Board later halved his prison term to six years and reduced the fine to RM50 million at its 61st meeting on Jan. 29, 2024.

Najib continues to face other legal challenges, including a Dec. 26 high court sentence of 15 years imprisonment and an RM11.4 billion fine for abuse of power and money-laundering related to 1MDB, which he has appealed. Civil suits also require him to repay US$1.3 billion to SRC International and involve additional claims by SRC International, Gandingan Mentari, and 1MDB subsidiaries.
