Trump Cancels Meeting with Democratic Leaders Amid Government Shutdown Impasse
President Trump has canceled a scheduled meeting with Democratic leaders Schumer and Jeffries, increasing the risk of a government shutdown as the September 30 funding deadline approaches.
President Donald Trump has canceled a planned meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, intensifying concerns over a potential government shutdown as the September 30 funding deadline nears.
In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump stated, "After reviewing the details of the unserious and ridiculous demands being made by the Minority Radical Left Democrats in return for their Votes to keep our thriving Country open, I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive."
The meeting was intended to negotiate a funding deal to prevent a shutdown. Democrats have been advocating for the inclusion of enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits, set to expire at the end of the year, in any stopgap funding measure.
Schumer and Jeffries criticized the cancellation. Schumer remarked, "Trump is running away from the negotiating table before he even gets there." Jeffries added, "Donald Trump just cancelled a high stakes meeting in the Oval Office with myself and Leader Schumer."
Congress remains at an impasse, with both chambers currently in recess and not scheduled to return until September 29. The House passed a temporary funding bill to extend operations into November, but it failed in the Senate due to lack of Democratic support, as it excluded key health care provisions.
The situation echoes the 2018-2019 shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, also under Trump's leadership. Despite Republicans holding the majority in both chambers, the parties remain deeply divided over health care policy.
