Toronto police investigate two separate cases of needles and pins found in Halloween candy

Résumé

Police are probing two unrelated incidents in which sewing needles and pins were discovered in commercially packaged Halloween candy in the Upper Beaches and Leslieville neighbourhoods, with no injuries reported.

Toronto police are investigating two distinct reports of sharp objects found in Halloween candy collected by children in the city’s east end. The first case involved a sewing needle and a pin discovered in separate packages of candy gathered on Main Street and Swanwick Avenue in the Upper Beaches area. The second case involved two pins found in candy collected on Gerrard Street East and Jones Avenue in Leslieville. Police have confirmed that the routes associated with the two incidents did not overlap, indicating the incidents are unrelated.

No injuries have been reported and authorities say none of the objects were consumed. Residents are being reminded to inspect candy before consumption and to contact police if they find any suspicious items.

"We found multiple sharp objects hidden inside candy," family member Mariko Kawano told CityNews after the discovery.

The investigation follows a similar case in Oshawa, where Durham police also opened an inquiry after sewing needles were allegedly found in Halloween treats.
