Delhi-Gurugram border traffic congestion expected to persist despite BS-VI checks

सारांश

Traffic police say peak-hour jams near the Delhi-Gurugram border will continue for the next two to three days, and vehicle emission checks are not a major cause.

Congestion on the road linking Delhi airport to Gurugram remained heavy during peak periods, with a nearly three-kilometre stretch between DLF Cyber City and Udyog Vihar staying clogged. Traffic police expect the slowdown to continue for the next two to three days as vehicle movement stays high ahead of the Diwali holidays.

Officials noted that inspections of vehicles that do not meet BS-VI emission standards at the Delhi border are not a significant factor, because only a small number of older-type vehicles are arriving at the entry point.

"Hardly any BS-III or BS-IV vehicles are coming to the border to enter Delhi. The checking of these vehicles is not contributing much to the congestion," a traffic police official said.

The Delhi government began enforcing a ban on non-BS-VI vehicles on November 1 as part of a winter pollution-control plan. BS-VI standards, introduced nationwide in April 2020, tighten limits on nitrogen-oxide and particulate emissions. Studies by the International Council on Clean Transportation show that BS-VI private cars emit about 81% less nitrogen-oxide than BS-IV models, while BS-VI buses cut emissions by roughly 95%.
