Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel dies after on-field collision, police launch manslaughter probe
Jesús de Miguel, 30, died following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a LaLiga 2 match, prompting an involuntary manslaughter investigation and league-wide match postponements.
Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter after Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel died following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in a LaLiga 2 match on Monday. De Miguel, 30, suffered cardiac arrest after the challenge for a loose ball in the seventh minute of stoppage time and was taken to hospital, where his condition later deteriorated neurologically.
The match was abandoned, and Owono received a red card for a high-kicking tackle deemed excessive force. The Spanish Football Federation suspended all football activity on Tuesday, postponing two Copa del Rey fixtures and the Spain Under-21 match against Japan.
CD Tenerife released a statement expressing deep sorrow and requesting privacy for the family. Several clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Espanyol, issued condolences, and UEFA announced a moment of silence before its matches this week. The investigation will involve prosecutors, according to the National Police.
"I am deeply saddened by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda, a player for CD Tenerife," LaLiga president Javier Tebas said in a statement.
"We are heartbroken by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda. In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his teammates, everyone at Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin added.
De Miguel had joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025 and helped the club secure promotion to the second division the previous season.
