Spanish second-tier club CD Tenerife confirms death of forward Jesus de Miguel after match collision

Summary

CD Tenerife announced that 30-year-old forward Jesus de Miguel died following a cardiac arrest caused by a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper during a league match.

CD Tenerife confirmed that forward Jesus de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest caused by a collision in a match against FC Andorra. The incident occurred in the final minutes of stoppage time when Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono rushed out to clear a long ball and struck de Miguel in the chest with his knee. De Miguel collapsed on the pitch, remained motionless while teammates and opponents called for medical help, and received on-field treatment for more than five minutes before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

Owono received a straight red card for the foul. In response to the tragedy, the Spanish Football Federation postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures, and cancelled the official presentation of Spain’s Under-21 match against Japan as a sign of respect.

UEFA announced a moment of silence before European games that week. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said, "> We are heartbroken by the death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. We have searched for words and found only silence."

Barcelona and Real Madrid each issued statements expressing condolences to de Miguel’s family, teammates and club. De Miguel, born in Madrid in 1996, joined Tenerife from Castellón ahead of the 2025-26 season and had scored 11 goals the previous campaign.
