Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel dies after collision in second-division match

Résumé

Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel died following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owown during a Segunda División game, prompting match abandonment and condolences from clubs and the Spanish federation.

Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died on Tuesday after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono in a Spanish second-division match. The incident occurred near the end of a 2-2 draw at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium, leading to Owono’s dismissal and the abandonment of the game.

Club Tenerife announced the death in a statement, expressing sympathy for the player’s family, friends and supporters. Spanish media reported that de Miguel suffered cardiac arrest, was resuscitated and later placed in intensive care, where his condition deteriorated before he passed away.

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who is a majority shareholder of Andorra, posted a condolence message on social media. The Royal Spanish Football Federation also issued a statement of sorrow and postponed Tuesday’s Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches as a sign of respect. Real Madrid observed a minute of silence before training, and Espanyol delayed the presentation of its new coach.

De Miguel, 30, had joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025 after a spell with Castellón and had previously played for Leganés, Unionistas de Salamanca and other clubs. He contributed to Tenerife’s promotion to the second division.
