Queensland on alert as bureau warns of severe thunderstorms with large hail and strong winds

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for southeast Queensland, citing the risk of large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain that could cause flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology has placed southeast Queensland on alert for another round of severe thunderstorms, warning that the system could bring large hail, strong winds and heavy rainfall. Areas most likely to experience intense conditions include the south-east coast, Darling Downs, Granite Belt, Wide Bay-Burnett and the southern Central Highlands.

“These storms may produce damaging to destructive winds, large to giant hail and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding,” meteorologist Christie Johnson said.

“Peak times for severe storms will be as we get more heat coming in through the day, so particularly into the late morning and through the afternoon.”

The advisory follows storms that hit parts of Queensland less than 24 hours earlier, with hail up to 10 cm reported near Glenwood on the Fraser Coast and rainfall of more than 50 mm recorded at Cooroy in 30 minutes. Johnson noted that two weather systems are expected to converge by the afternoon, increasing the likelihood of a significant storm over southeast Queensland.

“Destructive winds of up to 120 km/h are possible, with the strength to bring down trees and powerlines,” she added.

While the bureau said tornado-like conditions are not ruled out, Johnson emphasized that such events are rare and that damage from strong winds is the more likely outcome. Residents in the affected regions are advised to monitor updates, as warnings may be adjusted throughout the day.
