Florida Learjet 60 crash kills nine, including 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras

सारांश

A Learjet 60 traveling from Austin to the Bahamas crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine aboard; the co-pilot was identified as 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, who earned her private pilot's licence while still in high school.

A Learjet 60 that departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County on Sunday afternoon, killing all nine people on board. The aircraft descended rapidly, with air traffic control recordings capturing a Mayday call followed by the crew reporting a loss of time before the jet impacted the ground and ignited.

The co-pilot has been identified as 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, a Palm Beach County resident who obtained her private pilot's licence at age 17 while still a senior at West Boca Raton High School. According to her family, she had accumulated about 1,300 flight hours and had been working as a commercial pilot for nine months.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the incident a "major tragedy" during a press conference near the crash site. Palm Beach County officials reported the evacuation of roughly 600 nearby residents to shelters following the impact, which created a large crater near a mobile-home park.

The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration also participating. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the event as a "horrific tragedy." Bombardier, the manufacturer of the Learjet 60, said it will cooperate with investigators.

"We’re going to crash into the ground," a voice from the cockpit said as the descent rate accelerated, according to the released audio.

"We’re out of time," was the final transmission heard before the aircraft struck the ground.

The identities of the other eight victims have not been released.
