Police in several provinces are investigating incidents of needles and a syringe found in Halloween candy, urging parents to inspect treats before distribution.

Police services across Canada have issued alerts urging families to examine Halloween candy after multiple reports of tampered treats. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Nova Scotia and Alberta, provincial police in Quebec, and Durham Regional Police are among the agencies investigating the incidents.

In Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood, a father reported finding five pieces of candy that appeared to have been altered. He said, "You hear of these things happening, but you never think it’s going to happen to you or your family or your kids."

Durham Regional Police confirmed a investigation after sewing needles were discovered in candy in Oshawa. Quebec provincial police received two calls about needles found in chocolate or candy in Drummondville, about 100 kilometres northeast of Montreal. In Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia, a parent discovered a syringe in a child’s bag after trick-or-treating.

The RCMP in Blackfalds, Alberta, reported a needle found in candy collected from several neighbourhood streets, including Cedar Square and Pioneer Way. All investigations remain ongoing, and no injuries have been reported.

The Toronto father added, "Be diligent, check the candy," and noted that while Halloween celebrations are important to children, the incidents are prompting parents to be more selective about the houses they visit.
