Martha Stewart apologizes again for controversial Halloween costume depicting homelessness

Resumen

The lifestyle mogul issued a second apology after a Halloween costume that portrayed homelessness drew criticism for being insensitive.

Martha Stewart posted an Instagram photo over the weekend showing herself in a costume meant to represent a homeless person, with a dirt-streaked face, torn clothing and a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY. HELP ME!!”. The image was quickly removed after users shared screenshots and expressed outrage.

In a follow-up Instagram statement, Stewart wrote, "It's hard to admit when you've really screwed up. My earlier statement didn't go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry." The apology came after an earlier comment in which she said the costume was intended to raise awareness about homelessness.

Critics, including actress Indya Moore, argued that dressing as a group in crisis is inappropriate. Moore said, "If you were serious about poverty, you'd use your platform to back policies that tax the rich, put free food in front of people who are hungry and homeless, and provide free health care and education." She also suggested charities for Stewart to support.

The incident occurs amid a broader cost-of-living squeeze in the United States, where a recent survey indicated that 47 % of Americans reported financial difficulties due to rising prices. Stewart, whose net worth is estimated at $400 million, resides on a 150-acre estate in Katonah, New York. The backlash has continued to appear in comments on her brand’s Instagram account.
