Karl Bushby finished a 31,000-mile walk from South America to Hull, ending a 28-year journey and reuniting with his mother at their family home.

British adventurer Karl Bushby has finished a 31,000-mile (50,000 km) walk that began in November 1998 from Punta Arenas, Chile, and concluded in Hull, England, where he was welcomed by a crowd in the city centre before walking the final few miles to his mother’s house.

Bushby, a former paratrooper, adhered to two self-imposed rules during the trek: he would not return to the United Kingdom until the journey was complete and he would not use any form of transport to advance. The expedition took him across four continents, including crossing the Darién Gap, the frozen Bering Strait and swimming the English Channel.

At the family home in Sutton Park, Bushby told the BBC that the reunion felt "surreal" and that he was "still processing" the experience. He said, "> It’s good to be home. It feels surreal," and later added, "> I’m hanging my boots up," during a press conference.

The lord mayor of Hull, Maria Coward, presented Bushby with a welcome, and he expressed gratitude to the crowd, saying, "> There has never been a welcome home like this, I am sure. It's madness. An enormous thank you." He also noted that the "biggest team – Earth – got me back here."

Family members, including his 36-year-old son Adam, a 12-year-old granddaughter, his father and brothers, met him as he crossed the Humber Bridge into East Yorkshire. Bushby said the reunion was "amazing."

Looking ahead, Bushby said he plans to share his story, is collaborating with filmmaker Werner Herzog on a documentary, and is working on a second book about his travels. He acknowledged that readjusting to ordinary life may be challenging, noting the potential for an identity shift after completing a lifelong adventure.
