After 28 years and an estimated 75 million steps, Karl Bushby returned to his hometown of Hull, England, concluding his self-directed "Goliath Expedition" that spanned multiple continents and oceans.

Karl Bushby, 57, finished a 28-year walk that began in Chile on November 1, 1998, by entering his native Hull, England, on Monday. The journey, known as the "Goliath Expedition," covered roughly 75 million steps and required Bushby to avoid any motorised assistance and to remain away from home for the entire period.

Bushby said the effort was supported by a global network of people. > "I didn't do this alone. There was a big team, the biggest team: Earth. That's what it took to get me back," he told the crowd gathered in Hull.

His route took him north through Central America, the United States and Canada, across the Bering Sea to Russia, and onward through Central Asia. He spent 31 days swimming across the Caspian Sea to bypass the conflict in Ukraine and later swam the English Channel before reaching the United Kingdom.

Upon arrival, Bushby walked the final three miles to his mother's home, where he was greeted by local residents and an honor guard. He embraced his mother on the street and reflected on the meaning of home after a generation abroad. > "I'm home, but it's not the home that I'm used to now for so long. And it's an odd feeling. And I almost feel guilt," he said.

Looking ahead, Bushby said he will now focus on processing his experiences and remains optimistic about humanity despite ongoing global challenges. > "The world's in a little bit messier time; there are more wars, you know. But it's all good. At the end of the day, we've been through worse. So we all need to breathe a little bit, get through the tough times; we're going to be just fine," he told CBS News.

He concluded with advice for others pursuing ambitious goals: "Dream big. Realize you're probably capable more than you think. People constantly underestimate themselves. That's the first step."
