Martha Stewart apologizes for controversial homeless-themed Halloween costume

Resumen

The TV personality said her costume was meant to raise awareness about homelessness but acknowledged it was insensitive and issued an apology.

Martha Stewart said she is “distressed” and “sorry” after a Halloween costume portraying a homeless person drew criticism on social media. In an Instagram post that has since been removed, Stewart appeared in a black hat, distressed jeans, a cardigan and face makeup, holding a sign that read “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” while promoting her candle collection.

Critics described the outfit as tone-deaf and offensive. Stewart told Page Six that the costume was intended to bring attention to homelessness, a issue she said she cares deeply about and supports through charitable work. She added that the backlash was unintended.

Later, Stewart posted an apology on her Instagram story, writing that it was “hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up” and that her earlier statement “didn’t go far enough.” She acknowledged the costume was “insensitive and not funny” and expressed regret for any hurt caused.

CNN contacted Stewart’s representatives for further comment.
