Sen. Chris Murphy hospitalized after stroke, condition improving

Résumé

Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday and is reported to be awake, alert, and responding well to treatment.

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, was hospitalized on Saturday after experiencing numbness in his arm at his son’s hockey game, which was later diagnosed as a stroke, his chief of staff said. He was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring. Murphy, 53, is reported to be awake and alert and responding well to treatment, with doctors encouraged by his progress.

"We are optimistic he will make a full recovery," the statement from his office added.

Murphy, who was first elected to the House in 2006 and to the Senate in 2012, was scheduled to campaign in New Hampshire alongside Representative Chris Pappas. The incident follows strokes suffered by three other Senate Democrats in recent years, including Senators Ben Ray Luján, Chris Van Hollen, and John Fetterman.

Republican senators, including Chuck Grassley and Pete Ricketts, offered prayers for Murphy, and President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the news, saying, "Nobody wants to have that."
