Andrea Kimi Antonelli clinches 2026 title and celebrates podium with Hamilton and Verstappen
Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli became the youngest Formula 1 world champion at the Mexico City Grand Prix and later said he will frame a photo of himself being lifted by Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the youngest champion in the sport’s history. After a cautious start, the Mercedes driver increased his pace and executed a decisive overtaking move on Charles Leclerc, which helped him finish on the podium behind race winner Max Verstappen.
Antonelli said nerves affected his performance throughout the weekend, but he managed to settle into a rhythm during the race. He described the final lap as particularly emotional, noting that he reduced his speed because he could not see the track clearly and was overwhelmed by memories of his karting career.
Following the race, Antonelli was joined on the podium by two multiple-time world champions, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. He said he plans to frame a photograph of the moment when Hamilton and Verstappen lifted him onto their shoulders, describing it as a memory he wants to keep at home.
"I will definitely frame the picture and put it on the wall of my house, so I can see it very well whenever I go in," Antonelli said.
During the podium ceremony, Italian songs were played, prompting Antonelli to recall his grandfather’s love for the music. He expressed gratitude and emotion, adding that he felt his grandfather would be proud.
"The first song was very emotional for me because it was a song my grandfather always listened to. I think he would be very proud," he said.
The young champion’s emotional response drew applause from the media present at the event.
