Martha Stewart apologizes for homeless-themed Halloween costume
The 85-year-old lifestyle entrepreneur issued an apology after criticism over a Halloween costume portraying a homeless person, saying the outfit was insensitive and not intended to offend.
Martha Stewart said she is “very sorry” for wearing a costume that depicted a homeless person for Halloween, describing the outfit as “insensitive.” In an Instagram post she wrote, “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry. Martha.”
Stewart told Page Six that the costume was meant to raise awareness about homelessness, adding that the issue remains “one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises” and that she has supported related charities.
The post, which showed Stewart in a beanie, tattered clothing and a sign reading “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!” was quickly deleted after drawing backlash on social media. Critics said the portrayal showed a “disconnect from the desperation and suffering of so many people,” while some supporters defended the costume as a nostalgic Halloween choice.
Stewart also referenced her past business earnings and legal troubles, noting she once earned $65 million a year from Kmart royalties and later lost about a billion dollars due to legal issues stemming from an insider-trading conviction.
