Zach Cregger's Resident Evil Reboot Reaches $400 Million Worldwide
The latest Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger has earned $400 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing entry in the franchise.
Director Zach Cregger’s reboot of the 1990s zombie video-game franchise has reached a $400 million worldwide box-office total, according to industry reports. The film has generated $157.4 million in North America and $242.6 million in overseas markets, surpassing the previous franchise record set by 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which earned $312 million globally.
The movie opened in September with a series-best $60 million domestic debut and $108 million worldwide, overtaking the 2010 release Resident Evil: Afterlife’s opening figures. Strong critical reception and audience scores helped sustain its performance through October, a peak period for horror releases. Major overseas markets included China ($71.4 million), the United Kingdom ($19.4 million) and Mexico ($12.7 million).
Cregger’s version follows a five-year gap since the studio’s last attempt to revive the property, the 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which underperformed commercially. The franchise’s first adaptation appeared in 2002, starring Milla Jovovich, who reprised her role as Alice in five subsequent sequels.
