FBI Links North Korean Hackers to $6.3 Billion Binance Theft

Ամփոփում

The FBI has attributed the recent $6.3 billion theft from Binance to North Korean hackers known as TraderTraitor, who were also involved in a previous $1.5 billion hack.

The FBI announced that the recent theft of $6.3 billion from Binance, the largest crypto heist to date, was executed by North Korean hackers identified as TraderTraitor. This group is also linked to a $1.5 billion hack of Bybit last year. In a statement, the FBI described the attack as part of "malicious cyber activity" and urged crypto exchanges and blockchain analytics firms to block transactions associated with the stolen assets to prevent laundering.

The investigation revealed that TraderTraitor is primarily converting the stolen funds into ethereum and is expected to utilize decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms and instant swap services for further transactions. Crypto expert Ari Redbord noted that the hackers are likely to break the stolen assets into smaller amounts to launder them through various exchanges, a process that could take months. He emphasized the importance of tracking these funds in real time to aid investigations and recover stolen assets.

During a Halloween event at his Mar-a-Lago estate, President Donald Trump commented on the situation, expressing uncertainty about North Korea's involvement, stating, "I'm not concerned. We're learning about it. We don't know if it's North Korea."

Binance has assured its customers that it has sufficient reserves to cover 90% of the stolen assets and will fully reimburse affected users.
