Controversial Referee Decision Overshadows UFC Vegas 123 Main Event
A controversial decision by referee Dan Miragliotta during the UFC Fight Night 292 main event has sparked significant backlash from analysts and fighters alike.
The main event of UFC Fight Night 292 in Las Vegas was marred by a contentious decision from referee Dan Miragliotta, who stood up fighters Renato Moicano and Tom Nolan during a critical moment in the second round. Moicano, who was in a dominant position with a body triangle, was abruptly removed from the ground, leading to a significant shift in the fight's momentum.
UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, serving as a broadcast analyst, criticized the decision as 'actually insane,' noting that it allowed Nolan to recover and ultimately secure a third-round TKO victory. Cormier expressed his frustration, stating, "A referee error ultimately casts a little bit of a shadow over what was a beautiful performance by Tom Nolan."
Laura Sanko, also on the broadcast team, supported Cormier's view, emphasizing that being in such a position is a sign of activity in grappling rather than inactivity. The post-fight discussion echoed this sentiment, with veteran welterweight Alan Jouban and coach Din Thomas expressing their discontent over the decision. Jouban remarked, "You can't stand them up in that position," highlighting Moicano's expertise in rear-naked chokes, which he has successfully executed multiple times in his career.
Despite the controversy, some analysts acknowledged that Nolan may have still secured the win, but the referee's decision has left a cloud over the event, detracting from what was meant to be a defining moment for Nolan.
