FBI Links Binance Hack to North Korean Hackers, Trump Expresses Uncertainty

The FBI has attributed the recent $6.3 billion hack of Binance to North Korean hackers known as TraderTraitor, while President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about the attribution.

The FBI has identified North Korean hackers, referred to as TraderTraitor, as responsible for the theft of $6.3 billion from Binance, marking one of the largest cryptocurrency heists in history. The bureau stated that this attack is connected to previous malicious cyber activities, including a $1.5 billion hack of Bybit last year. In response, the FBI has urged cryptocurrency exchanges and blockchain analytics firms to block transactions associated with the stolen funds to prevent laundering.

Despite the FBI's claims, President Donald Trump, speaking at a Halloween event at his Mar-a-Lago estate, expressed uncertainty regarding North Korea's involvement. "I'm not concerned. We're learning about it. We don't know if it's North Korea," he said, indicating that further investigation is needed.

Crypto expert Ari Redbord noted that the hackers are likely to attempt to launder the stolen assets through smaller exchanges over time, describing the situation as a high-speed bank robbery. He emphasized that while the theft is complex, tracking and tracing the funds in real time is possible, allowing for ongoing investigations and potential recovery of the stolen assets. Binance has assured customers that it has sufficient reserves to cover 90 percent of the missing funds and will fully reimburse affected users.
