Youth-led Protests Erupt Across Europe Amid Rising Living Costs
Mass protests against high living costs have swept across Europe, with significant participation from young people, though some events turned violent in Germany and Portugal.
Protests against rising living costs have mobilized hundreds of thousands across Europe, predominantly led by youth. French authorities reported a decrease in violence during recent demonstrations, with police anticipating further protests as schools reopen. In Germany, nationwide protests saw over 100,000 participants advocating for increased government investment in education, housing, and climate protection. However, some protests escalated into violence, particularly in Frankfurt, where rioters clashed with police, resulting in injuries and arrests.
In Paris, clashes occurred at the end of a march, with rioters targeting police and causing property damage, although overall violence was less severe than in previous weeks. Authorities deployed approximately 70,000 police nationwide in anticipation of unrest. A national police official noted that preparations were made for both peaceful demonstrators and potential troublemakers.
In Portugal, riot police forcibly removed protesters from a square in Lisbon after demonstrations for affordable housing. The protests, inspired by movements in Spain, have been ongoing as citizens voice their concerns over rising living costs. The youth initiative “Gen Z regelt” in Germany distanced itself from violence, while German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt condemned the actions of violent groups during the protests.
