Bank of England Expected to Raise Interest Rates

摘要

The Bank of England is anticipated to increase interest rates to 4% on November 5, marking the first rise since August 2023, as inflation pressures mount.

The Bank of England is expected to announce an increase in interest rates to 4% from 3.75% during its upcoming meeting on November 5. This would be the first adjustment in borrowing costs since August 2023, reflecting growing concerns over rising inflation in the UK economy.

Financial market traders are predicting this move as pressure mounts on the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to address inflation, which rose to 3.5% in September, the highest level in 11 months. Contributing factors include increased energy prices, particularly following a 3.6% rise in Ofgem's energy price cap for typical households on October 1, with further increases projected in January.

Ellie Henderson, an analyst at Investec, noted that the MPC's patience with inflation is likely wearing thin, suggesting that a precautionary rate hike could mitigate the risk of temporary price shocks becoming permanent. Suren Thiru, chief economist for the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW), echoed this sentiment, stating that a rise to 4% appears almost certain and would be seen as a necessary measure to manage price pressures.

Despite these inflationary challenges, the UK economy showed unexpected resilience with a 0.1% growth in August, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.7%, the lowest in over a year. The MPC will consider these mixed economic signals as it deliberates on future rate adjustments.
