North Korean Hacking Group Linked to Major Crypto Heist

Resumen

The U.S. has attributed a $6 billion cryptocurrency theft from Binance to North Korea's TraderTraitor hacking group, marking one of the largest cyber thefts in history.

U.S. authorities have linked North Korea's TraderTraitor hacking group to the theft of over $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance, marking what is considered the largest cryptocurrency heist to date. This incident, which occurred on October 29, is part of a series of significant cyberattacks associated with North Korea, a country that has developed a sophisticated hacking operation to fund its weapons programs.

TraderTraitor is connected to the Lazarus Group, known for past cyberattacks, including the 2014 Sony Pictures hack. The FBI has noted that North Korea has invested heavily in its cyber capabilities, with an estimated 8,400 personnel in its hacking force as of 2024. According to the FBI, many of the country’s top students are funneled into computer science and IT training, contributing to the growth of this cyber force.

The group employs tactics such as posing as recruiters to trick victims into downloading malicious software, which can compromise computer systems and lead to the theft of sensitive information. For instance, in a 2024 incident, a North Korean hacker impersonated a recruiter on LinkedIn to steal $308 million from a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange.

North Korean hackers have been linked to numerous high-profile thefts, including the $81 million heist from Bangladesh’s central bank in 2016 and the 2017 WannaCry ransomware attack. In 2023, TraderTraitor was implicated in several cryptocurrency thefts totaling nearly $200 million, and in February 2025, the group was blamed for stealing approximately $1.5 billion from the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit.

Experts indicate that the North Korean regime launders stolen cryptocurrency to finance military research and procure weapons components. Analysts suggest that cybercrime offers Pyongyang a means to acquire substantial funds quickly while circumventing international sanctions that limit its ability to earn foreign currency through traditional trade.
