Two AAP MLAs Resign in Punjab After Ticket List Announcement

摘要

Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra have resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party following the release of the first candidate list for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, highlighting internal tensions within the party.

Two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs in Punjab, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra, have resigned from the party ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Pathanmajra, representing Sanaur, submitted his resignation to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, while Jouramajra, who previously served as a Punjab Cabinet Minister, announced his departure via social media and addressed his letter to Punjab AAP president Aman Arora.

Their resignations occurred shortly after AAP released its first list of 40 candidates for the upcoming elections, notably without including candidates for the constituencies of Sanaur and Samana, where the two MLAs serve. Jouramajra's exit raises questions about the party's strategy for the Samana constituency, especially after the appointment of former Punjab minister Surjit Singh Rakhra as constituency in-charge, who is viewed as a potential candidate.

Pathanmajra's resignation reflects ongoing tensions with AAP leadership, as he has previously criticized the party's governance. His departure is also linked to a legal case involving allegations of rape, which has drawn significant media attention. Pathanmajra was arrested earlier this year in connection with the case but was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in May.
