28-year-old marathon trainee found brain-dead after stabbing on Brooklyn waterfront

摘要

Police say 28-year-old Katie Suarez, who was training for the New York City marathon, was stabbed on a Brooklyn promenade on Friday and later declared brain-dead at a city hospital.

A 28-year-old woman training for the New York City marathon was attacked on a popular Brooklyn waterfront promenade on Friday evening. Police identified the victim as Katie Suarez, who was jogging near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway in Bath Beach when she was stabbed in the neck. Her father discovered her on the path and emergency responders transported her to Langone Hospital, where she was later declared brain-dead.

Police described the incident as appearing random and have not made any arrests. Investigators are canvassing the area for video footage and have deployed specialty units, including scuba, aviation, K9 and drone teams, to assist with the investigation.

"NYPD taking this very seriously and have many of our speciality teams out last night and all of today, including scuba, aviation, K9s, and drones," a police spokeswoman said.

Neighbors described Suarez as a quiet, kind person who worked as a bank teller and was well-known in the community. One resident, who has lived in the neighborhood for three decades, said the attack left her feeling unsafe and expressed a desire for increased personal protection.

The promenade, which runs along Graves and Bay and offers views of Staten Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, is typically used by walkers, cyclists and fishermen. Recent precinct data show overall crime down 0.5%, though felony assaults have risen 17% as of late October.

Police continue to seek witnesses and any video evidence that could help identify the attacker.
