Tornado sweeps Southern Tablelands, prompting emergency warnings

Résumé

A tornado that passed through the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales caused road damage and tree loss, leading the NSW Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Services to issue safety advisories.

The NSW Rural Fire Service posted video of a tornado forming north of Gunning, followed by photographs of fallen trees and road debris in the towns of Goulburn, Sutton and Yass. The service’s Southern Tablelands Zone Facebook page described the event as a reminder of the intensity of the weather system that moved across the region on Saturday. It noted multiple incidents and said State Emergency Services volunteers were assisting firefighters with clean-up operations.

"Operations are expected to continue well into the night as crews respond to storm damage and associated hazards," the post read.

"Please continue to take care on the roads, avoid damaged areas where possible, and follow the advice of emergency services."

The SES issued further warnings for Sunday, urging residents to stay indoors away from windows and to consider road conditions before traveling, recommending alternative arrangements for work, children and pets.

"Move to or stay indoors, clear of windows, bringing children and pets with you," the NSW SES advised.

"If you must travel, consider the consequences of road conditions and closures and make alternative arrangements for work, children and travel."
