Israel reportedly plans covert operation targeting Iran's military leadership

Israeli officials are said to be considering a surprise strike against four senior Iranian military figures, with U.S. officials also discussing possible targets if hostilities resume after the U.S. midterm elections.

Israeli security officials are reportedly weighing a covert operation aimed at four senior members of Iran's military leadership, according to a former senior Mossad operative. The plan, described as "Operation Grim Beeper," would involve surprise tactics similar to a 2024 raid that used explosive-rigged devices against Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon and Syria.

The four Iranian figures identified as potential targets are Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander-in-chief Ahmad Vahidi, Basij forces commander Hossein Taeb, Iranian army chief of staff Ali Abdollahi and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei. All have been sanctioned by the United States for activities related to terrorism or human-rights abuses.

"This is the bread and butter of Israeli strategy – surprise twists and turns, unexpected moves, and I am absolutely certain that Israel has cards in the sleeve that will be used," the former Mossad official said.

U.S. officials, including retired General Jack Keane, have also discussed targeting Iran's leadership and its nuclear and missile programs if military action resumes. Keane said intelligence gathered during a recent cease-fire period provides significant insight into Iran's capabilities.

Kamala Harris has recently sent a letter to Rezaei in an effort to restart diplomatic talks, though no response has been reported. Analysts warn that any Israeli or U.S. strike would likely provoke a strong Iranian retaliation against regional energy infrastructure and possibly Israel itself.

"The regime's interest is survival; they’ll fight harder," said Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior director of the Iran Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Iranian officials have previously indicated internal disagreements over policy decisions, including the management of the Strait of Hormuz, which could affect the dynamics of any future conflict.
