Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov Requests Trade Ahead of Free Agency

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov, the league’s current Hart Trophy winner, submitted a trade request after confirming he will not re-sign with the club once he becomes an unrestricted free agent in the summer. The request was disclosed on Friday, and the Lightning’s general manager Julien BriseBois issued a statement saying the organization “unequivocally has no intention of trading Nikita.”

Kucherov, 33, is under a $9.5 million per-season contract that will expire after the 2024-25 season. As a top-scoring forward and a key contributor to the Lightning’s two Stanley Cup titles, his potential departure raises significant salary-cap implications. BriseBois, who has previously opted not to match market value for longtime franchise players, is reportedly evaluating the trade request in the context of maintaining a competitive window while managing long-term cap flexibility. The Lightning retain a list of ten teams approved for a potential deal, and the trade deadline on March 1 offers a window for negotiations.

If a trade were to occur, the Lightning could receive substantial assets in return for a player who would otherwise become a free agent at season’s end. Conversely, retaining Kucherov would allow the team to pursue another championship run with the reigning scoring champion on the roster.
