Jailer 2 crosses Rs 500 crore in India, sets global Tamil film record

摘要

The Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 earned over Rs 500 crore domestically and Rs 765 crore worldwide within 15 days, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film globally.

Jailer 2’s earnings on Thursday fell slightly from the previous day, recording Rs 6.55 crore across all Indian languages. After 15 days in theatres, the film’s domestic gross surpassed Rs 500 crore, making it only the second Tamil movie to reach that milestone. The first was S. Shankar’s 2018 sequel 2.0, which earned Rs 519 crore in India.

Unlike 2.0, which benefited from a wide Hindi release and a prominent antagonist played by Akshay Kumar, Jailer 2 faced a limited Hindi rollout after disputes with major multiplex chains over its four-week window before streaming. Consequently, the Hindi-dubbed version contributed about Rs 54.75 crore, roughly one-fifth of 2.0’s Hindi earnings, while most revenue came from the Tamil and Telugu versions.

Globally, Jailer 2 has amassed Rs 765.15 crore, overtaking 2.0’s lifetime worldwide total of Rs 691 crore and becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film worldwide. The sequel to the 2023 hit Jailer features a cast that includes Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan, with cameo appearances by Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan. It is produced by Sun Pictures.
