Health officials say five cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, including three children in intensive care, may be tied to Brookshire Farms pumpkin patch in San Luis Obispo County.

Health authorities in San Luis Obispo County have confirmed five cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection, with three children requiring intensive care. The cases are being investigated as possibly linked to Brookshire Farms, a pumpkin patch that closed shortly before Halloween. The county’s advisory indicates that exposure likely occurred between Oct. 16 and Oct. 26, and urges anyone who visited the farm during that period to watch for gastrointestinal symptoms.

"We are working diligently to identify the source of these infections to protect the health of our community," said County Health Officer Dr. Christy Mulkerin in a news release. "We encourage anyone who may have been exposed and is experiencing symptoms consistent with E. coli infection to seek immediate medical attention."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that typical E. coli symptoms include severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea and dehydration, with complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome posing higher risk to children under 10. Infectious disease physician Dr. Tyler Evans explained that dehydration from diarrhea is a primary concern and emphasized hand-washing as a key preventive measure.

Brookshire Farms has voluntarily closed while investigators determine the source of the outbreak and assess any additional risk. The farm said it is awaiting test results from the county health department before commenting further.
