Inmate Christa Pike describes ongoing pain after botched Tennessee execution

摘要

Christa Pike, sentenced to death for a 1995 murder, said she continues to experience physical and mental pain a month after a failed execution in Tennessee.

Christa Pike, who is on death row for the 1995 killing of classmate Colleen Slemmer, issued a statement through her lawyers describing persistent physical discomfort and mental anguish a month after a botched execution attempt in Tennessee. She said the injection of a large dose of pentobarbital caused continuous pain in her body and throat, and left her struggling to speak.

"My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak. And the pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul," Pike said.

Pike also criticized the handling of the execution, referring to the “incompetence” that led to the failed procedure.

"I’m deeply hurt by the incompetence that has put so many people in this terrible position," she said.

The September 30 execution attempt was halted after execution staff spent nearly an hour trying to establish an intravenous line, ultimately delivering a full 5 g of pentobarbital without achieving the intended effect. Medical experts expressed surprise at the apparent procedural failures.

After ten days of intensive hospital treatment, Pike remains in the infirmary at the Debra Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, largely in solitary confinement. She noted that isolation adds to her suffering, recalling that she spent the first 28 years of her sentence in solitary.

State Governor Bill Lee has paused further executions pending an external review, though he indicated that Pike’s death sentence is likely to remain unchanged unless a court orders otherwise.

Pike, who said she had been prepared to die on the night of the execution, expressed uncertainty about why she survived and what lies ahead. She thanked medical staff, first responders, her attorneys, and supporters worldwide for their assistance and encouragement during her recovery.
